When our ride arrives, we leave the diner and jump into the waiting Jeep. Sean gestures for me to take shotgun. He gets into the back, then grabs the hand of the man driving.

“Thank you for doing this, Tanner. You have no idea. This is Jane Simon.”

Tanner Reed grins at me, offering his hand. “Of course. I’ve heard a lot about you, Jane. Let’s get you both to the safe house.” He puts the Jeep in drive. “I saw a dozen cruisers on my way here from West Oaks. Those weren’t all for you, were they?”

Sean and I both groan, but neither of us has an answer.

We drive off.

Tanner is a huge beast of a man. His shoulders are twice as broad as mine. He’s wearing a tight T-shirt, but I’m guessing it’s not tight on purpose. He’s got full sleeves of tattoos on both arms, which are thick as my thighs.

Tanner’s a bodyguard with Bennett Security. They provide personal protection services to the wealthiest of West Oaks. Before I worked with them myself, the company had always struck me as a bit elitist. Not the kind of service that I or my typical clients can afford. But Max Bennett also volunteers his company’s resources to help law enforcement with difficult investigations.

They’d never helped out the defense side until one of my cases.

Now, I’m friends with Max and his wife, who happens to be the West Oaks Assistant DA. I even went to their wedding. Bennett Security still makes its money from the West Oaks rich, but Max pays back his good fortune by working pro bono, sometimes for police and prosecutors, sometimes for the defense. I’m beyond grateful that they’re helping Sean and me. I intend to pay them for their aid, but I have the feeling Max Bennett—when he returns from his honeymoon—will refuse.

Tanner and Sean fall into an easy banter. They’re clearly good friends. “Did you meet each other working on a case when Sean was with the LAPD?” I ask.

“Nah, I’ve known this guy for a lot longer than that.” Tanner hooks his thumb at the back seat. “Since our military days. Makes me feel old.”

Sean huffs, shaking his head.

“Were you a Marine too?”

“He wasn’t that cool,” Sean says. “Just the Navy.”

Tanner barks a laugh. “I was a SEAL.”

“Oh.” I make a show of being impressed—and I am—but mostly I’m just playing along. I’m pretty sure Tanner’s sharp eyes caught Sean and me holding hands as we left the diner. “Well, then.”

“Yep, what can I say? Sorry Ms. Simon, I’m taken.”

Sean grumbles, but he’s hiding a smile. “What is the obsession with Navy SEALs? The ones I know are annoying.”

“Yeah, so annoying when we swoop in to rescue your ass.”

“I think Sean’s still smarting from the first time he needed rescue today,” I point out. “But this morning, it was me doing the swooping.”

“Figures,” Tanner says, grinning. “What kind of mess has got both Jane Simon and Sean Holt in need of a safe house? This about the courthouse shooting?”

“Have you guys heard much about it?” Sean asks.
